Gemini App Passes One Billion Monthly Users, Seven Months After 750 Million

Google says its consumer assistant crossed the billion mark in August, a milestone that is real but measured differently from ChatGPT's.

Key takeaways

  • Gemini app monthly users went from over 750M (Q4 2025 call) to 950M (Q2 2026 call) to 1 billion on Aug 11, 2026.
  • Pichai tied the growth to higher engagement per user after Gemini 3 launched in December.
  • Google counts monthly actives while OpenAI quotes weekly users, so the headline numbers are not directly comparable.

Google said on August 11, 2026, that the Gemini app has passed one billion monthly active users. The announcement came barely three weeks after Alphabet's second-quarter earnings put the figure at 950 million, and about six months after a 750-million disclosure, making it one of the fastest scale-ups in consumer software, with some important caveats about what is being counted.

The trajectory

The first public marker came in February 2026, when CEO Sundar Pichai said in prepared remarks for the fourth-quarter 2025 call that the Gemini app had more than 750 million monthly active users. He attributed the growth to significantly higher engagement per user, linked to the December launch of Gemini 3. On the second-quarter call on July 22, the number was 950 million, and daily active users had tripled year over year. The August 11 announcement was a standalone update rather than part of an earnings release.

The company has not published how it defines a monthly active user, how many people pay for a subscription, or how frequently a typical user opens the app. It also reports the Gemini app separately from AI Overviews and AI Mode in Search, which Alphabet said crossed one billion users on their own.

Apples and oranges with ChatGPT

The natural comparison is with ChatGPT, but the numbers do not line up. OpenAI's most-cited figure is 800 million weekly users, stated by Sam Altman at DevDay in October 2025. A weekly count is a stricter bar than a monthly one: someone who opens an assistant once a month counts for Google's metric and not for OpenAI's. Google's claim is therefore a real sign of reach, but not proof that Gemini has overtaken ChatGPT in habitual use.

Why it matters

Distribution is doing a lot of the work. Gemini is built into Android and woven through Google's other products, and it is about to become part of Apple's ecosystem as well: under the January 2026 partnership, Gemini models will power the new Siri in iOS 27. Counting direct Gemini-app use alone, Google has still scaled faster than most rivals expected.

The pace also reflects product cadence. Gemini 3's December launch drew an engagement jump that Pichai highlighted, and Alphabet has been pairing model releases with consumer features rather than shipping them in isolation. The earnings-call framing that daily actives tripled year over year suggests this is not only a story of light, occasional use.

The open question is monetisation. Alphabet did not say how many of the billion pay for Gemini, which matters because serving large models is costly and the company has guided to heavy capital spending, with a 2026 capex forecast of $175 billion to $185 billion given in February. Reach without revenue is a strategic asset, but investors will want to see the conversion path.

The enterprise side

The consumer milestone sits beside a business one. In the same February remarks, Pichai said Google had sold more than eight million paid Gemini Enterprise seats in the roughly four months since launching the product. That suggests the company is trying to turn assistant familiarity into workplace subscriptions, using the consumer app as a funnel and a proving ground. It is a familiar playbook, the same one that made Gmail and Docs ubiquitous before Workspace became a major revenue line.

It also helps explain why Google keeps stressing engagement rather than headcount. A billion occasional users is a marketing statistic; a base that opens the app daily, as the tripling of daily actives implies, is the one that justifies serving costs and supports paid upsells.

What to watch

  • Alphabet's third-quarter call for a fresh Gemini figure and any disclosure on paid subscribers or engagement depth.
  • Whether OpenAI updates its own user numbers, and on which basis.
  • How much of Gemini's growth is organic app use versus bundled and default placements.
  • Siri AI's fall launch, which could extend Gemini's reach to Apple users without counting in these totals.
